Expanding the bonds and the fruits of the 1st Kyoto University – UC San Diego Joint Symposium, “New Era of Transpacific Knowledge Interactions,” in Kyoto in March 2015, the 2nd Joint Symposium was held on March 14-16, 2016, at UC San Diego’s La Jolla campus in California, the northern vicinity of San Diego City. More than 300 researchers, students and people from multiple communities gathered to touch on the research front line and had excellent networking and communication opportunities over the three days.

The Kyoto delegation included eight recommended and selected young and striving researchers.

On day 3, March 16, many of the researchers had individual seminars and/or intensive discussions on ongoing and possible collaborations. Two campus tours were also arranged for Kyoto University researchers.

Kyoto researchers from the Institute for iPS Cell Research and Application joined the laboratory tour at UC San Diego’s “Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.”

Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine

Kyoto researchers from the Institute of Advanced Energy and Graduate School of Economics joined the facility tour for advanced energy facilities and laboratories. UC San Diego is acclaimed for producing more than 85% of its electricity energy by their own solar and biomass turbine systems saving more than 8 million US dollar a year in power costs.

After lunch, the group visited the PISCES Plasma laboratory at the UC San Diego Center for Energy Research, which is a science co-center that focuses on an innovative approach to plasma-surface interactions sciences. Then the tour showcased the variety of laboratories; the Ultrafast and Nanoscale Optics Laboratory, the Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion, the Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting Laboratory, and the Solar Energy Laboratory.

Kyoto University and UC San Diego signed a university-wide Memorandum of Understanding for research and educational collaborations in February 2014, and the 1st symposium in March last year brought together a large number of researchers from diverse disciplines with a sense of mission as members in higher education institutions (from Kyoto side, 16 graduate schools and institutions participated.)

As a new addition to these landmarks, the 2nd Joint Symposium is already incubating new research opportunities and educational collaborations. Discussions on the establishment of further sustainable mechanisms for mutual collaborations have been also initiated.

Record, Program Brochure and Report for the 1st Joint Symposium (March 2015 in Kyoto) can be viewed from this link.
