Vice-President Yasuyuki Kono attends Japan-Indonesia Rectors’ Conference (July 10-11, 2025)

The 6th Joint Working Group Japan-Indonesia 2025 (Japan-Indonesia Rectors’ Conference), a gathering of presidential-level university executives from Japan and Indonesia, was held at Hasanuddin University (Makassar, Indonesia) on July 10–11, 2025. Vice-President Yasuyuki Kono (VP for international strategy) attended on behalf of Kyoto University.

A total of about 200 people participated in the conference, including representatives of Japanese and Indonesian universities, the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (33 institutions in Japan and 49 in Indonesia).

The theme of the conference was “Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation in Facing Global Uncertainties.” On the first day, greetings and keynote speeches were delivered by the representatives of participating institutions and companies in Indonesia and Japan. The second day featured presentations from each participating university on their initiatives pertaining to the three topics of environment, social–governance, and strategic issues.

The conference also provided opportunities for individual meetings, and the Kyoto University delegation met with counterparts from four universities to discuss the possibility of further education and research development at Kyoto University and the counterpart institutions.

It is expected that the conference will further promote cooperation between Japan and Indonesia, and lead to a wide range of research collaboration and personnel exchanges between universities and research institutions in the two countries.
