ASAFAS Alumni Seminar in Bangkok 2017

On 29.9.17 Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies(ASAFAS), together with Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Kyoto University ASEAN Center, and Center for On-Site Education and Research (COSER), Kyoto University, held the alumni seminar at Kyoto University ASEAN Center.

The seminar aimed to reunite the alumni as a part of 20th year anniversary of ASAFAS. This seminar was divided in 2 major session.

The 1st session: “Networking Field Stations in ASEAN Region”, Prof. Shinya Takeda served as Chair, introduced and reported the research activities of each stations; ASAFAS, CSEAS, CSEAS Bangkok Liaison and Kyoto University ASEAN Center. Mr. Tamaki Suzuki, a representative of Kyoto University ASEAN Center, have reviewed the current of our status and our research activities since we have established in 2014.

The 2nd session: “ASAFAS Alumni Interactive Seminar”, Prof. Yoshifumi Tamada and Prof. Akihisa Iwata served as a chair, presented by Assoc. Prof. Viengrat Nethipo, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, and Assist. Prof. Prachya Musikasinthorn, Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University, also lectured about “Diversity that we don’t need –A review of the present status of Alien fish problems in Thailand”.

Assoc. Viengrat Nethipo made a lecture about the benefit and disadvantage of spending high cost to promote Thai local politic parties in the area of 2 different point of views; laws and Buddhism. In addition, we also discussed and define the correct meaning of “Corruption” in Thai language.

Besides, Assist Prof. Prachaya Musikasinthorn, made a lecture about the crisis situation of alien species in biological resources. Owing to Buddhism tradition in Thailand that have the idea of making merit by releasing the animal especially fish into the sea or river which is becoming the big issue for destroying the ecology and biodiversity to Thailand.

The total of participants are 15 people which 1 of them are coming from The Republic of Korea. After the seminar ended, we all gathered joining the 20th year anniversary dinner party at Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Bangkok Liaison, for sharing the greatest time and our history through 20 years.
