The 7th Nichi-Doku Joint Lecture: What Matters in 21st Century Learning: From the Surface to the Deep Structure of Instructional Quality in Schools

The 7th Nichi-Doku Joint Lecture in Kyoto on February 6 was held by Prof. Sliwka from the Institute for Educational Science, University of Heidelberg. She tried to answer the question of “What Matters in 21st Century Learning: From the Surface to the Deep Structure of Instructional Quality in Schools” using the background of her latest research in primary school in Japan and New Zealand. Prof. Sliwka argued that “deep structure” of innovative learning environments must be strengthened.

The commentary was provided by Dr. Ishii Terumasa, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education and Faculty of Education at Kyoto University. He explained the role of practical research in teachers’ education which is supported by the autonomy of teaching in Japanese classrooms. The idea of introducing the advancing diversity in German classroom to educational studies in Japan and its possible issues were lively discussed in the discussion after the lecture.
