Report
NTU-KyotoU-UHH Strategic Partnership Trilateral Symposium 2024 (November 18–19, 2024)
The NTU-KyotoU-UHH Strategic Partnership Trilateral Symposium 2024 was collaboratively held by Kyoto University, National Taiwan University, and the University of Hamburg at National Taiwan University on November 18–19, 2024. Since the conclusion of academic exchange agreements with National Taiwan University in 2005 and the University of Hamburg in 2017, Kyoto University has promoted active collaboration with both institutions, and in 2020 the collaboration was further deepened through the conclusion of strategic partnership agreements. The strategic partnerships aim to develop cross-disciplinary research collaboration, pioneer joint research in new academic fields, and promote researcher mobility.
This was the first trilaterally-held symposium by the three institutions, all of which mutually recognize each other as strategic partners. A total of approximately 100 people participated over the symposium’s two days.
The first day of the symposium began with greetings by President Wen-Chang Chen of National Taiwan University, Vice-President Jetta Frost of the University of Hamburg, and President Nagahiro Minato of Kyoto University. Then, in the senior leadership presentations session, Executive Vice-President Shih-Torng Ding of National Taiwan University, Vice-President Jetta Frost of the University of Hamburg, and Executive Vice-President Tetsuo Sawaragi (EVP for research ethics, integrity, code of conduct, and international affairs) of Kyoto University spoke about the support for early-career researchers and career support provided by their respective institutions. After the presentations, a panel discussion on academic career development was held, with the participation of Vice-President Yasuyuki Kono (VP for international strategy) of Kyoto University, Ms. Ayu Tabuchi, a doctoral student in Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Medicine, and faculty members and early career researchers from the three universities.
In the afternoon of the first day, President Minato gave an NTU Royal Palm Lecture titled “The Coming of Aging Society: Immunity of Aging and Aging in Immunity,” during which he discussed the role of immunology in addressing the challenges faced by aging societies. Approximately 250 people attended the lecture. During the question and answer session, faculty and students from National Taiwan University engaged in a lively discussion.
The second day of the symposium featured five parallel sessions, with the following faculty members representing Kyoto University in each session: Prof. Shuhei Furukawa of the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Science (iCeMS) in the Renewable Energy session, Associate Prof. Akitoshi Mori of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) in the Environmental Studies session, Associate Prof. Yoshiyuki Ueda of the Institute for the Future of Human Society (IFoHS) in the Wellbeing of Society session, Prof. Yuichi Imanaka of the Graduate School of Medicine in the Health Care Management and Economics session, and Associate Prof. Kosei Yamaguchi of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) in the Flood/Disaster Prevention session. The symposium ended on a high note, with participants presenting their research in each of the parallel sessions, engaging in cross-disciplinary discussions, and exploring the prospects for future research collaboration.
