Science in the Age of Challenges

This is the fifth joint symposium held by our two universities, and the theme on this occasion is “Science in the Age of Challenges.”

Ten years have passed since the first joint symposium, and this event provides an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to our partnership, strengthen our current collaborative initiatives, and envision new ones.

As today’s rapidly changing society throws up a succession of diverse challenges, universities, as academic research institutions, must play an increasingly important role in addressing those issues. We are also expected to cultivate the young researchers who will go on to play key roles in addressing the as-yet-unforeseen challenges of the future.

In addition to further developing our current joint research initiatives, this symposium aims to expand our collaboration into new fields, enabling our researchers to help seek solutions to an even wider range of problems. It will also provide an opportunity for early-career researchers to gain a foothold for their future research by connecting with their peers and experienced researchers.

The symposium aims to achieve those goals by providing an opportunity for researchers from our two institutions to communicate and share ideas about joint projects in research, education, and beyond.

「ボルドー大学－京都大学　戦略的パートナーシップシンポジウム 2024」を開催しました。（2024年3月4日~6日・於　ボルドー大学）

 

京都大学はボルドー大学（Université de Bordeaux）との共催で「ボルドー大学－京都大学　戦略的パートナーシップシンポジウム 2024」をボルドー大学にて開催しました。両大学は2014年に大学間学術交流協定を締結して以降活発な学術交流を推進し、2019年10月に両学長のリーダーシップのもとで戦略的パートナーシップ協定を締結しました。戦略的パートナーシップでは研究連携の分野横断的な展開、新しい学術分野での共同研究開拓、研究者の流動性促進などを目的にしています。

本シンポジウムはScience in the Age of Challengesをテーマとして掲げ、既存の共同研究分野であるHealth、Energy、Material Science、Neuroscienceの4つの分野に加え、新規分野における共同研究の創出を目指してHorticultural Science、Ecological Science、Public Healthの３つの分野も参加し、計7つの分科会の下に両大学から研究者が集いました。シンポジウムには全体で約80名が参加し、その中には、将来の課題解決を担う若手研究者も多数含まれます。

シンポジウム初日はボルドー大学のDean Lewis 学長および湊 長博 総長の挨拶で開幕しました。続く基調講演では、林 康紀 医学研究科 教授がSleep and Memoryについて、ボルドー大学のLaurent Groc 博士 (Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience [IINS])がDecrypting brain cell communication in health and disease at the single molecule levelについて話されました。続いてのラウンドテーブルディスカッション1では、湊総長、Lewis学長の他、CNRS、INRAE、在フランス日本大使館、在日フランス大使館からの参加者が登壇し、International collaboration between KU and UB, Japan and Franceをテーマとし、今後起こり得る予測不能な問題への大学としての対応や、若手研究者の育成について議論しました。

シンポジウム2日目の午前中は各分科会にて研究内容の発表や、今後の共同研究計画についての話し合いが行われました。午後の各分科会によるプレゼンテーションでは、今後の共同研究の展望など、分科会で話し合われた内容が全体に向けて発表されました。その後のラウンドテーブルディスカッション2では、各分科会の代表(Health: 松田 文彦 医学研究科 教授、Energy: 佐川 尚 エネルギー科学研究科 教授、Materials Science: 陰山 洋 工学研究科 教授、Neuroscience: 林 康紀 医学研究科 教授、Horticultural Science: 田尾 龍太郎 農学研究科 教授、Ecological Science: ⾨脇 浩明 白眉センター 特定准教授、Public Health: 石見 拓 医学研究科 教授)らが登壇し、シンポジウムのテーマでもあるScience in the Age of Challengesをトピックとして、司会者の質問に回答する形で登壇者がそれぞれ発言し、今後の研究における優先課題等について意見交換が行われました。

閉会式では河野 泰之 副学長（国際戦略担当）およびボルドー大学のEtienne Duguet 副学長（イノベーション担当）がシンポジウムの総括を行い、その後に両学長より閉会の挨拶があり、盛況のうちにシンポジウムは幕を閉じました。

3日目にはフロワック旧天⽂台跡地の実験林等を訪問しました。実験林では自然環境の変化が森林植生に与える影響に関する研究が行われており、木々や地中に設置されたセンサー等によるデータ収集についての説明を受けました。参加者は興味深く解説を聞き、活発な質疑応答が行われるなか、実験林の見学を終えました。
