Objectives

The Kyoto University and National Taiwan University Symposium 2014 aims to build on the success of the inaugural joint symposium held in Taiwan on 19–20 December 2013. Based on the special relationship between the two institutions, the symposium brings together leading researchers with the aim of strengthening collaborative research activities and promoting the exchange of knowledge, skills, and ideas.

Through a stimulating series of lectures and workshops, the symposium will enable researchers to explore contemporary issues across a wide range of scientific fields. These activities form part of Kyoto University’s 2x by 2020 (Double by Twenty-Twenty) Initiative, which emphasizes a collaborative approach to research and education, with the wider goal of increasing global competitiveness.

The key objectives of the symposium are:

  • – to promote international collaborative research
  • – to disseminate research findings across diverse fields and raise the global profile of both universities

Report

The 2nd symposium between Kyoto University and National Taiwan University was held on 1–2 September 2014, aiming to build on the success of the inaugural joint symposium held in Taiwan on 19–20 December 2013.
Over 300 researchers from various fields participated in the symposium.
Based on the special relationship between the two institutions, the symposium brought together leading researchers with the aim of promoting international collaborative research, disseminating research findings across diverse fields, and raising the global profile of both universities.

The symposium began with welcome addresses by President Hiroshi Matsumoto of Kyoto University and President Pan-Chyr Yang of National Taiwan University.
Overview presentations of both institutes were given by Professor Michiaki Mishima, Executive Vice-President for International Affairs and Hospital Administration, Kyoto University, and Professor Luisa Shu-Ying Chang, Dean of the Office for International Affairs at National Taiwan University, after which a signing ceremony of two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) was held.

Following the signing ceremony, two keynote lectures were delivered by Professor Susumu Noda of Kyoto University and Professor K Arnold Chan of National Taiwan University Hospital.

At the evening reception, a special lecture was delivered by Professor Yasuyuki Kono of Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies.

Over the course of two days of discussion, a total of fourteen parallel sessions encompassing various fields of research were held, and preliminary results were reported at a wrap-up session.

The symposium was then officially closed with addresses by Professor Liang-Gee Chen, Vice President for Academic Affairs at National Taiwan University, and Professor Kiyoshi Yoshikawa, Executive Vice-President for Research, Kyoto University. It is anticipated that the two universities will further strengthen collaborations and promote advanced, strategic exchange of knowledge and skills in the future.
