Report
The 2nd Kyoto University-University of Vienna Joint Workshop (October 24–25, 2019)
The 2nd Kyoto University-University of Vienna Joint Workshop was held at Kyoto University on October 24–25, 2019. The first joint workshop was held in September 2018, prior to the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement between the two institutions on October 8, 2019.
The workshop’s four parallel sessions sought to further develop exchange and collaboration in the three fields of focus of the previous workshop: comparative social politics, material science, and cognitive biology, and also to expand research collaboration into the two newly added fields of art history and Asian studies. A notable feature of the workshop was that three of the four sessions focused on topics from the humanities and social sciences. An opening ceremony was held on October 24, which featured addresses by Dr. Kayo Inaba, Kyoto University’s executive vice-president for gender equality, international affairs, and public relations, and Prof. Sebastian Schütze, dean of the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies. Keynote lectures were then delivered by Prof. Schütze and Prof. Kayo Hirakawa of Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Letters, after which researchers from both universities delivered presentations in the parallel sessions and engaged in active discussions.
In the evening, Dr. Nagahiro Minato, Kyoto University’s provost and executive vice-president for strategy coordination, research, planning, and hospital administration, and Dr. Hideo Saji, deputy executive vice-president for research, attended the workshop’s reception dinner, during which the participants shared ideas regarding future research collaboration under the strategic partnership agreement.
On the workshop’s second day, a plenary session was held in which representatives from each parallel session shared the outcomes of their discussions and presented their prospects for future collaboration under the strategic partnership agreement. This was followed by a question and answer session, during which the participants shared their opinions. President Juichi Yamagiwa posed several questions relevant to all four session fields before bringing the workshop to an end with a closing address. After the workshop, the participants visited the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) of the Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS) and the university’s Seifuso Villa, providing them with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Kyoto University’s history and research activities.
