KyotoU ‘Omoroi’

Across the cutting-edge science and globalizing education, Kyoto University brings the spirit of ‘omoroi’ to all of its work. ‘Omoroi’ is a word from the Kyoto dialect, meaning ‘interesting’ but having strong sense of ‘out of the box’, ‘creative’, ‘on the edge’ and ‘unorthodox’. Kyoto faculty, researchers and students are all challenged to use the freedom of intellectual pursuit that is enshrined in university’s motto, to challenge conventions, bridge disciplines and take the risk of asking the truly ‘omoroi’ questions that hold solutions to society’s problems.
