Abstract

Japanese scholars have a long-standing tradition of conducting research in Southeast Asia, yet the intellectual contributions arising from these endeavours and how researchers reflect on them remain underexplored. This lecture examines the development of Japanese scholarly knowledge within contemporary Southeast Asian studies, outlining key conditions that shape research methodologies in this field. Focusing on the engagement and contributions of Japanese scholars across diverse disciplines, we employ both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including ethnographic insights, to analyse the motivations and intellectual experiences driving this research. We identify central themes and distinctive qualities of multidisciplinary area studies in Japan, highlighting Japan’s unique contributions to global Southeast Asian studies. We draw attention to collaborative initiatives to the development of Southeast Asian Studies emphasizing Japan’s role in knowledge production.
