Universität Hamburg – Kyoto University Strategic Partnership Joint Symposium 2023 (June 9 & 10)

The symposium was held in June at Universität Hamburg to renew the universities’ strategic partnership signed in 2020 and to kicked-off for the next three years of cooperation.

In autumn 2022, Rector Hauke Heekeren visited Kyoto and met President Nagahiro Minato. At this occasion, they discussed proposals of topics for a joint symposium and agreed on ‘Planetary Health’.

The Universität Hamburg – Kyoto University Strategic Partnership Joint Symposium 2023 was finally held on June 19 and 20 in Hamburg.

In parallel sessions, senior and next-generation researchers exchanged views and solutions to major global issues revolving around ‘Planetary Health’ – ‘Infectious Diseases’, ‘Climate Change’, ‘Environmental Economy’ and ‘Biodiversity’. There was much consensus between researchers. On the other hand, differences in social and cultural backgrounds helped to form different perspectives and solutions enriching the discussions.

It is expected that the discussions on planetary health will continue over the next three years and develop into joint research.
