Abstract
Albrecht Dürer is undoubtedly the most famous artist of the Early Modern Period to travel from the North to Venice and work there. However, two generations earlier, another painter made the journey: Giovanni d’Alemagna. Unlike Dürer, he stayed in Venice for the rest of his life. He married into the Venetian painter family Vivarini and contributed to major works of Venetian painting in the 1440s. This lecture explores the historical context of his journey and his collaboration in the workshop. One focus is on whether his contributions can be traced in the surviving altarpieces.
