The “DAAD-Kyoto University Partnership Programme” aims to foster academic exchange and co-operation between institutions of higher education and research institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany and Kyoto University in order to promote joint research projects and scientific collaboration in any field connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through funding to increase the mobility of junior scholars and Early Career Researcher (ECR) Early Career Researchers (ECR) include students still pursuing their doctoral degree and scholars holding a Ph.D. -degree for no longer than 5 years, excluding time for childcare leave.
Support
- Amount: Max. 2,000,000 JPY (e.g., international air fare, accommodation costs, registration fee for participating symposium and conference, and necessary consumables.)
Period of Support
- Two years.
Fund starts on April 1, 2026 (in Kyoto) / January 1, 2026 in Germany (by DAAD).
Application Schedule
- Application period: 11 June,Wednesday 2025 to 1 September, Monday 2025.
- Review and individual interview (if necessary): late September to November 2025.
- Result: to be announced in around mid-December 2025.

- The DAAD-Kyoto University Partnership Programme and the JSPS Bilateral Joint Research Projects are separate programmes. German co-applicants should apply specifically to the DAAD-Kyoto University Partnership Programme. Please refer to the application procedures on the DAAD website (Programm des Projektbezogenen Personenaustauschs | “Japan mit der Universität Kyoto ab 2026“).
If you wish to apply to the JSPS Bilateral Joint Research Projects instead, please follow the guidelines for that specific programme. - It is prohibited to apply simultaneously to the DAAD-Kyoto University Partnership Programme and the JSPS Bilateral Joint Research Projects/Seminars. Recipients of funds from other DAAD projects may be subject to restrictions on receiving funds in accordance with DAAD rules in Germany.
