An interview with Ms. Wang Jingye, 1st graduate student from Graduate school of Global Environmental Studies in Master Degree Program, an intern at UNESCO Bangkok office. (10.10.17)

UNESCO Bangkok office is the core organization in education, science, culture, communication, information policy and human resources development which cooperate with Thailand and neighboring countries. Currently, Ms. Wang Jingye is doing an internship in Natural Science Unit for 3 months from September to the end of November. We would like to introduce her activities through our interview. Please kindly find out below.

Q: Why did you decide to do your internship at UNESCO?

Ms. Wang Jingye is doing a research on renewable energy policies in Asia at Graduate school of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES).   KU Asean Center staff had an interview about the process to apply to internship in UNESCO Bangkok office.

Wang: “It could be a long story. First, internship program is one of the characteristics of GSGES. In the spring semester we have lectures and in the fall semester, we are encouraged to do internships at domestic and overseas organizations or universities. Personally, I think I was given a spirit of adventure and I would be happy to challenge myself, experience new environment and meet different people. I decided to do my internship at an international organization since it can give me a broader platform to learn more and deeper with a global perspective, and luckily, I was accepted by Natural Sciences Unit, UNESCO Bangkok. In addition, I am also enrolling CoHHO* program, which provides subsidy to support my internship in Thailand. Thanks to this program, my graduate school and all professors as well, I can make full use of this opportunity to accumulate precious experience in abroad, which would also be beneficial for my future career.”

Q: What kind of activities are being held at UNESCO Bangkok Office?

Working at UNESCO Bangkok office enables her to access to the latest information about the environmental and energy policies in ASEAN region, which is grateful opportunity.

Wang: “Based on UNESCO Annual Report and Database, I am gathering the latest data and information about renewable energy policies in Asia-pacific regions. The obtained information is quite valuable and important for my Master research. Here, the international conferences and symposiums are also held frequently. I can find many opportunities to cultivate the network together with different people from all over the world such as Canada, France, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and so on. Most interns here are doctoral students with high educational backgrounds and various practical experience. They are very nice people and I also enjoy working together with them.”

Q: What is your future plan ?  Any messages to next generations who are interested in internship in abroad ?

Wang: “Previously, I was a little worried before traveling because I was not studying Thai language, and there was actually some inconvenience during that time. So, I really suggest students who will do internship overseas to learn local languages in order to get used to new life as soon as possible. Fortunately, I was blessed with my friends and senior boss who helped me a lot in both work and life. I would like to combine the experience and information which I gained from UNESCO with my master thesis. After graduation, I plan to work in Japan or international stage with this experience.”
