京都大学欧州拠点メールニュース　No.76「Meet and Greet under the Camphor Tree 2021 」をオンライン開催します。

8月のハイデルベルクは20度を下回る日が多く、夏が素通りして次の季節に移っていきそうな中、欧州拠点では9月8日（水）に開催するオンラインイベント「Meet and Greet under the Camphor Tree 2021」の準備の真っ只中です。本イベントは、京都大学について欧州の学生に紹介するという内容で、昨年も同様のイベントを開催したのですが、2022年こそは学生のモビリティが復活することを期待して国際教育交流課の協力も得て実施します。

このようなイベントで参加者から好評なのは本学留学経験者からの生の声なので、今回も協力を求めたところ思いのほか多くの欧州の学生から手が挙がり、ちょっとした同窓会という様相も。事前打ち合わせでは「京都大学は非常に国際的で、様々な国から集まった学生との出会いに恵まれたことがユニークな体験だった」といった声が聞かれました。こうして京都を離れてからもその経験をポジティブに語ってくれる学生を今後も増やすべく、今回のイベントでも京都大学の良さをアピールしたいと考えています。イベント情報に詳細を記載していますので、ぜひお知り合いの方等にもご案内下さい！

1.　欧州拠点Now!

「ハイデルベルク便り：What’s trending in Europe?」

世界各地で発生する大規模な洪水や山火事など、毎年増加する痛ましい自然災害は、将来の気候変動によって我々の生活や命が脅かされていることを、まざまざと見せつけているようです。先般発表された気候変動に関する政府間パネル（IPCC: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change）」の第6次評価報告書でも、その危機感が改めて表明されました。ヨーロッパの指導者は、これらの現象を引き起こす温室効果ガスの排出と気温の上昇を抑えるための野心的な目標を設定し、本学の欧州におけるパートナー大学は、ゼロカーボンを実現するための重要な研究に日々取り組んでいます。

In 2015, the Paris Agreement was adopted by 196 countries to address climate change and its negative impacts . The signers committed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared by pre-industrial level by reducing the emission of greenhouse gasses and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. However, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report published in August 2021 revealed that the earth is heating up much faster than anticipated and that the limitation to 1.5 degrees or even 2 degrees by 2050 is only achievable if we act fast. If we do not, extreme weather and rising sea levels will endanger and destroy the livelihood of millions of people.

As part of the European Green Deal (EGD), the European Commission set itself the target to reduce carbon emission to at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990) through regulations, renewable energies and improvements in energy efficiency. Four of five missions in the new Horizon Europe — EU’s key funding programme — are directly connected to the EGD.

One way to reduce CO2 emissions is by carbon capture and utilization (CCU). HeKKSaGOn member Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Kyoto University partner’s RWTH Aachen, TUM (Technical University of Munich) and LMU Munich cooperate with other partners in the Kopernikus project — a research initiative aiming for  Germany to be climate-neutral by 2050. With their Power-to-X (P2X) technology, they already manage to convert CO2 from the air or exhaust gases to fuel, heat or chemicals with energy from solar panels.

Another way to reach zero emissions is the transition from carbon based fuels to hydrogen. This is the central EU energy strategy of many European countries. Although hydrogen may not be used in individual transport, it will be very important in future maritime and air transport. Currently, 91 % of hydrogen are extracted from natural gas (“grey hydrogen”). However, a push is made towards converting hydrogen mainly by electrolyzing water powered by renewable energy (“green hydrogen”). At Norwegian University of Science’s Technology’s (NTNU) the Energy Team Hydrogen – a multidisciplinary team of researcher, engineers and entrepreneurs – researchers seek new materials, applications and markets to advance hydrogen as the fuel of the future.

Other universities are searching for long-term nature-based solutions (NbS) to reduce greenhouse gas emission. Oxford University researchers found that ecosystem restoration and improved land management can be a major contribution to lowering the temperature even until the end of this century. It would not only be beneficial for human well-being and biodiversity, but also mitigate the impact of climate change like loss of forests due to fires.

Scientists all over the world – and Kyoto University’s partners in Europe – already playing an important role in discovering and understanding climate change. They proved theories, calculated scenarios and developed models to predict what lies ahead. They also provide solutions to tackle one of humankind’s greatest challenges.
