Dr. Takahiro Yamamoto
Assistant Professor, Chair for Cultural Economic History at the Cluster of Excellence „Asia and Europe”, Heidelberg University
Takahiro Yamamoto studies history of nineteenth-century Japan, focusing on its cross-border connections. His research interests include modern Japanese history, border history, and history of travel documents. His current research project investigates the development of Japan’s passport system in the late-nineteenth century.
Prior to coming to Heidelberg, he was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellow (2016-17), affiliated with Graduate Schools for Law and Politics at the University of Tokyo. He has also served as a Global Perspectives on Society Teaching Fellow at New York University Shanghai.

Dr. Lyle De Souza, a former JSPS International Research Fellow(host: Professor Yasuko Takezawa),is a researcher at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University. His research interests include Nikkei literature and diaspora cultural identity. His current research project titled “The Literature of the Japanese Diaspora: Identity Beyond Japan” examines cultural identity in literature written by people of Japanese descent in countries across the world. Dr. De Souza was an Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck, Universityof London (where he also completed his Ph.D. in Japanese Studies), lecturing undergraduate and master’s students as part of Birkbeck’s Japanese Studies programme.
* The lecture series “Nichi-Doku Joint Lecture” is organized in close cooperation of the Kyoto University European Center, Heidelberg Office, and the Heidelberg University Office, Kyoto, the liaison offices of both universities in Japan and Germany. It aims at promoting and strengthening research exchange between Heidelberg University and Kyoto University.
